Indianapolis woke up Sunday to a quiet, troubling mystery on the city’s near northwest side. In the 800 block of West 29th Street, firefighters responding to a vehicle fire made a grim discovery inside the burned-out car. The man found dead has now been identified as 56-year-old Michael C. Lockridge.
According to police, crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department were the first to arrive after reports of a vehicle on fire. Flames were quickly knocked down, but once the smoke cleared, responders realized someone was inside. That moment shifted the scene from a routine fire call into something far more serious.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department stepped in and began examining the scene. As they looked closer, investigators determined that Lockridge had suffered trauma, separate from the fire itself. That finding raised immediate red flags and deepened concerns about how and why he died.
Authorities have not released details about the type of trauma or what may have happened before the vehicle caught fire. What is clear is that investigators are treating the case with urgency, carefully working through evidence from the vehicle and the surrounding area.
Neighbors along West 29th Street were left shaken. Several described a sudden rush of emergency lights and the smell of smoke cutting through the early hours of the day. By daylight, the burned vehicle stood as a stark reminder that something went terribly wrong on their block.
Police are now turning to the public for help. Detectives believe someone may have seen or heard something that could explain how Michael Lockridge ended up in a burning car. Even small details, they say, could matter.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Dustin Keedy at the IMPD Homicide Office. The investigation remains active and ongoing, as officers work to piece together the final moments of a man whose death has left more questions than answers.
