The small Melber community is grieving after 45-year-old Colleen Dunn was found dead Tuesday afternoon following a tragic single-vehicle crash in McCracken County. What started as a missing person case quickly turned into a heartbreaking recovery effort that left loved ones shaken and searching for answers.
According to investigators, concern first began to grow earlier in the day when Dunn had not been seen or heard from since the morning hours. Family members reportedly became alarmed after repeated attempts to reach her failed. Around 2 p.m. on May 26, the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office officially began investigating the disappearance.
Deputies worked closely with Dunn’s family throughout the search. Authorities reviewed information connected to her last known movements and used digital resources to narrow down areas where she may have traveled earlier that day. As the hours passed, anxiety continued building among those who knew her.
By approximately 2:50 p.m., deputies made the devastating discovery in the St. Johns area of McCracken County near Old U.S. Highway 45. Dunn and her vehicle were located deep inside a ravine, hidden from normal view. The discovery brought a painful end to the urgent search effort.
Preliminary findings from investigators suggest Dunn was involved in a single-vehicle crash after her vehicle reportedly left the roadway before overturning into the ravine. McCracken County Coroner Amanda Melton arrived at the scene and officially pronounced Dunn deceased.
