Jeffrey Johnson was just doing his job on a normal Thursday evening. He was a 51-year-old man from Flint who worked hard every day. He was on duty keeping people safe at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital. Then, everything changed in a split second. A sudden medical emergency took over, and his vehicle veered off the road completely.
The car rolled straight toward a deep retention pond on the hospital grounds. It slipped into the water and began to sink very fast. The vehicle went down about ten feet into the murky water. Nobody saw the crash coming, and Johnson was trapped tight inside.
The call for help went out to local emergency crews just before 6:30 p.m. First responders rushed to the hospital property immediately. They found the car completely underwater when they arrived. Time was running out fast, and they knew they had to act right away.
Three local police officers and three firefighters did not hesitate for a second. Two brave bystanders joined the rescue crew right away. All eight people jumped into the cold water together. They swam down to the submerged car to pull Johnson out.
The rescue team worked hard to free him from the front seat. When they finally got him to the surface, Johnson was in cardiac arrest. Paramedics immediately started doing chest compressions right on the shore. They worked tirelessly to bring him back.
