Michigan City, Indiana, Jeremiah Heard, Obituary, Death: What began as a prom celebration for local students in Pine Township turned into a violent scene that left one teen dead and several others injured, including Jeremiah Heard.
The incident unfolded just before 11 p.m. on May 9 at a residence in the 1700 block of Liberty Avenue. Investigators say a group of teens had gathered there after prom when gunfire suddenly erupted.

A teenage boy was killed at the scene. An 18-year-old female and another male juvenile were also wounded in the shooting. Jeremiah Heard, a student from Michigan City High School, was among those critically injured.
Police reports indicate that the situation escalated quickly, leaving little time for those inside and outside the home to react. Emergency responders transported victims to nearby hospitals as officers secured the area.
Heard’s family says he has already undergone multiple surgeries since the attack. His condition remains serious, and doctors are continuing treatment as he recovers from life-threatening injuries.
To support him and his mother, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched. The effort focuses on medical expenses, transportation, and lost income while his mother, a nurse, takes time away from work to stay with him.
Family members describe the situation as overwhelming, both emotionally and financially. They say Jeremiah had just been celebrating a major milestone before everything changed in a matter of minutes.
Authorities continue to investigate the shooting and are urging witnesses or anyone with information about the Liberty Avenue gathering to contact detectives as they work to determine what led to the deadly outbreak of violence.
