Knoxville North Park: Angel Melendez Killed During Police Search for Missing Teen

Knoxville was still waking up when gunshots shattered the calm at the North Park Apartments on Tillery Road. By the time the scene fell silent, Angel Melendez, 46, was dead. What began as a desperate search for a missing child ended in a moment that has left a neighborhood heavy with grief and unanswered feelings.

Police say officers arrived at the northwest Knoxville complex early January 28, 2026, following an endangered child investigation tied to a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation alert. A 15-year-old girl had been reported missing the night before. The trail led officers to an apartment at North Park, where they believed the child might be.

Inside, officers found both the missing teenager and Melendez. According to investigators, the situation turned tense within seconds. Police say Melendez pointed a firearm toward the officers. Two officers responded by firing their weapons.

Melendez was struck multiple times. Emergency help came quickly, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were hit by gunfire during the exchange.

Authorities confirmed the missing girl was not injured by police gunfire. In a frightening twist, investigators say the juvenile struck one officer in the head with a large knife during the chaos. The officer was protected by headgear and was not hurt. Police say the juvenile will face an assault charge.

Investigators also made clear that Angel Melendez was not related to the teenager. The connection between them, and how the situation escalated so fast, remains part of the ongoing investigation.

As with all officer-involved shootings in Tennessee, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, following standard policy. The Knoxville Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will also review the incident internally.

Now, beyond the flashing lights and official statements, a life has been lost. Friends and neighbors say Angel Melendez’s death has shaken the Knoxville community. North Park Apartments has grown quiet, marked by sorrow, reflection, and a shared hope that clarity and accountability will come as investigators work through the facts.
