Velpen, Daviess County: A quiet morning turned tragic when 50-year-old Amanda John lost her life in a single-vehicle crash along State Road 57.
It happened near County Road 575 South in the Sandyhook Curve area. Dispatchers got the call around 11:27 a.m. after reports came in about a vehicle hitting a guardrail.

Amanda John was driving a white 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe heading southbound when the crash occurred. For reasons still not clear, the SUV left the west side of the roadway.
The vehicle struck a guardrail before sliding into a deep ditch near the highway. The impact was severe and left little room for survival.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene as quickly as they could. Despite their efforts, Amanda John was pronounced dead at the location due to her injuries.
Authorities confirmed her family has been notified. The news has left loved ones and the Velpen community in deep shock, trying to process the sudden loss.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene as officials work to understand exactly what led to the vehicle leaving the road.
