Hope Town, Bahamas: American Woman Lynette Hooker Still Missing After Falling Overboard

Hope Town, Bahamas — The search for 55‑year‑old American tourist Lynette Hooker stretched into another day as officials and volunteers work without rest to find her. Hooker vanished on Saturday evening during what was meant to be a simple ride across calm Bahamian waters with her husband. They had left Hope Town around 7:30 p.m. headed to Elbow Cay in a small, 8‑foot dinghy.

Her husband, 58‑year‑old Brian Hooker, told police that at some point in the trip his wife fell into the water. According to him, she had the keys in her possession when it happened and the boat’s engine shut off immediately. He said a strong current carried her away faster than he could react.

Left alone in darkness without power, Brian said he tried to call for help but could not. He paddled the dinghy for hours and finally reached Marsh Harbour Boat Yard at about 4 a.m. early Sunday. He found someone there and told them what had happened. That person then called authorities.

Since then, a joint effort involving the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and local fire rescue teams has been combing the waters and nearby coastline for any sign of Hooker. The search has been slow and difficult, with strong currents and nighttime conditions complicating efforts.

Officials say they have not ruled out any possibilities yet. They continue to search the open sea and ask anyone with relevant information to speak up. There has been no contact with Hooker since she was last seen in the water.

Friends and loved ones are anguished. Many describe Lynette as an adventurous soul who loved travel and the open water. They remain hopeful that she might still be found alive or that new information will surface soon.

The incident has also stirred conversations about boating safety in the Bahamas. Many residents and visitors alike point to unpredictable currents in the Abaco Islands and caution travelers to prepare properly before heading out at night.

Authorities continue their investigation and the search operation, urging calm and cooperation from the public as they work tirelessly to locate Hooker and understand the full circumstances of her disappearance.
