Syracuse Mourns Rex Culpepper, Once a Fighter on Field and Off

Syracuse is in shock and deep sorrow after Rex Owen Culpepper, a former Syracuse University quarterback and beloved cancer survivor, has died at 28. Friends and family say he was killed this weekend in a dirt bike accident that left his community stunned and grieving.

Rex was the oldest son of former NFL player Brad Culpepper and his wife, Monica. He grew up around football and toughness, qualities he showed in every part of his life. The crash happened while he was riding this week, leaving no time for recovery and tearing a hole in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

His journey was marked not only by athletic ability but by resilience. While playing for Syracuse in 2018, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and endured surgery and intense chemotherapy. He beat the disease, returned to the field that same year, and became an emblem of courage for teammates and fans alike.

Rex’s college career saw him lined up under center, then later moving into tight end, but it was his return from illness that defined him. His grit earned him Syracuse University’s Jim DaRin Award for Courage and respect across the Orange community.

After football, he followed a path into law, earning his degree and gaining admission to the Florida Bar in 2024. Those closest to him describe Rex as humble, driven, and quick to offer a smile, even when life tested him hardest.

Family and friends have shared memories of Rex’s warmth, his sharp mind, and his bright future. He had recently become engaged, a moment they had hoped would lead into a joyful chapter of his life.

In Syracuse and beyond, people are honoring him not just as an athlete or a survivor, but as a son, a partner, and a man who never quit. His sudden passing is a reminder of the fragility of life and the strength of a spirit that fought through so much already.
