Athens police say 19‑year‑old Dylan Bentley has died after being shot early Saturday in downtown Athens. Bentley was one of three young people caught up in gunfire in a parking area on North Jackson Street. He died Sunday at the hospital from injuries he suffered in the shooting. Two others were hurt in the same incident.
Officers from the Athens‑Clarke County Police Department were called just after 2:20 a.m. Saturday to reports of shots fired behind several bars and restaurants. When they arrived, they found 22‑year‑old Clayton Adams already dead at the scene. Bentley and a third victim were both seriously wounded and rushed to a hospital. Bentley did not survive. The third victim, 20‑year‑old Landon Skinner, remains in critical condition.

Friends and family described Bentley and Adams as good‑hearted young men who were out with friends and enjoying the night when things turned deadly. Skinner’s mother said on Sunday that Bentley and Adams were trying to help her son when the gunfire erupted. In conversations with local reporters she called the two boys heroes for how they acted in those final moments.
Police say they have arrested 22‑year‑old Mark Desousa of Jefferson in connection with the shooting. He faces serious charges including malice murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery. Detectives have not yet publicly explained what led up to the shooting or what prompted the gunfire. Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and review evidence as part of an ongoing probe.
The tragic deaths have cast a long shadow over the Athens community. Friends of Adams described him as someone who cared deeply about others and was planning for a bright future. The loss of two young lives in such sudden fashion has left families and classmates struggling to make sense of it all.
Skinner’s family says their priority now is his recovery. They have asked for privacy as he remains hospitalized and sedated, fighting for his life. Meanwhile, police urge anyone with information about the case to come forward to assist the investigation.
There has been no official comment yet on whether the shooting was linked to any argument, altercation or wider dispute. Law enforcement agencies remain tight‑lipped as they work to piece together what happened that Saturday morning in a part of Athens known for its nightlife and late‑night crowds.
