Gabriel Lorenzo Beauford, a 44-year-old truck driver from Winter Park, lost his life Wednesday after a devastating collision involving two semi-trucks. By the time emergency crews arrived, the damage was already done.
Authorities say the crash happened just before 11 a.m., near the junction with State Road 471, about 10 miles north of Lakeland. Beauford was heading south in his 2008 Volvo semi-tractor when he approached another truck in front of him. That truck, a Mack semi driven by a 34-year-old man from Ocala, had slowed down to make a left turn.
What happened next was both sudden and catastrophic. Investigators say Beauford’s truck struck timber that was extending from the rear of the Mack truck. The impact forced large pieces of wood through the front of Beauford’s cab, tearing through the metal and into the trailer behind him. It was the kind of damage no driver could survive.
Officials at the scene described how the timber pierced not only the cab but also the cargo area, triggering a spill of hazardous materials. The situation quickly escalated beyond a typical crash, forcing multiple agencies to respond. Crews worked carefully to contain the spill and secure the area.
