Bessemer Tragedy: Orlin Dariel-Rodriguez and Son Killed on Eastern Valley Road

It was supposed to be an ordinary Sunday evening in Bessemer. A quick grocery run. A short trip home. But within minutes, a father and his young son were gone, leaving behind a quiet street now marked by heartbreak.

Authorities say 33-year-old Orlin Dariel-Rodriguez and his 3-year-old son, Jared Ramos, were struck by a vehicle just before 8 p.m. on March 15. The crash happened along the 700 block of Eastern Valley Road, a stretch known for its slopes and steady traffic. Both father and child were pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members say the moments leading up to the crash unfolded fast. Too fast. They had just returned home from grocery shopping when the child slipped out through an open door. The boy ran downhill toward the roadway, a steep path that connects directly to Eastern Valley Road.

Orlin didn’t hesitate. He ran after his son, closing the distance in seconds. According to relatives, he reached the child, but there was no time left to react to what was coming next. A vehicle was already approaching.

“He ran to him,” a family member said, describing the final seconds. “But when he grabbed him, he didn’t have time to get back.”

The impact happened in the roadway. Both were hit before they could move to safety. The loss was immediate and devastating, cutting short a father’s instinct to protect and a child’s brief, fragile life.

The driver involved in the crash stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office are now working to piece together exactly what happened. Their Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team continues to examine the conditions, timing, and sequence of events.

In the aftermath, what remains is grief and a story that many in the community won’t soon forget. A father’s last act was one of instinct and love. And in that moment, everything changed.
