Kapolei was shaken by gunfire that cut through a quiet cul-de-sac and ended the life of 26-year-old Noel Lono. What began as a tense argument inside a home turned deadly on what should have been an ordinary Friday afternoon. By nightfall, one family was grieving a loss that neighbors say still feels unreal.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in the neighborhood. Investigators said a 36-year-old man allegedly pulled out a firearm during a confrontation and shot Noel Lono in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members later shared that the suspect had previously been in a relationship with Noel’s 16-year-old cousin. That relationship had ended. The man reportedly returned to the home to collect personal belongings. Loved ones said Noel went there out of concern for her cousin’s safety, especially after past threats. They believe she stepped in because she felt responsible for protecting her family.
During the incident, the 16-year-old cousin was also shot and injured. Neighbors said they heard several gunshots and then saw the teen running from the home. Without hesitation, they rushed over and helped apply pressure to stop the bleeding. Emergency responders arrived shortly after and transported the teen to a hospital. She survived.
Police said the suspect later turned himself in at the Kapolei police substation. He was taken into custody and arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Authorities noted that the age difference between the suspect and the teenage girl will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
Those who knew Noel describe her as deeply devoted to her husband and fiercely protective of her family. They say she had a steady presence and a big heart. In their eyes, her final act was consistent with the way she lived—putting others first.
As detectives continue to piece together the events that led to the shooting, the Kapolei community is left holding onto memories of a young woman who tried to shield someone she loved. Her family now faces the difficult days ahead, surrounded by neighbors who say they will not let her name be forgotten.
