A quiet stretch of rural east Alabama has become the focus of an intense investigation after two people were found dead in a wooded area near Lanett. Authorities identified the victims as Jessica Folds, 47, of Lanett, Alabama, and Daniel Robbins, 44, of Macon, Georgia.
The troubling discovery was made Wednesday afternoon after deputies with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office received a report about a vehicle blocking the roadway in the 1000 block of County Road 86. Deputies arrived around 12:20 p.m. and began checking the area.
Not far from the vehicle, officers found Folds and Robbins unresponsive in a wooded area beside the road. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The discovery immediately triggered a large law enforcement response and raised questions that investigators are still working to answer.
Sheriff’s officials said the scene appeared unusual. A truck was reportedly left in the roadway with its headlights on and the driver’s door open. Investigators also observed signs that suggested the location may not have been where the deaths originally occurred.
Authorities later transported both bodies to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsies. Officials have not released the cause or manner of death, saying they are waiting for forensic findings before drawing conclusions.
Jessica Folds lived only a few miles from where the bodies were discovered. Friends and family members have been left searching for answers as investigators continue piecing together the final movements of both victims. Daniel Robbins, meanwhile, had traveled from Georgia, adding another layer of mystery to the case.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead in the case. Investigators are gathering evidence, reviewing information from the scene, and working to determine exactly what happened before the two were found.
