K‑7 Highway, Kansas: Dustin B. Saunders, 32, Dies in Late Night Crash

On a quiet Atchison County stretch of Kansas Highway 7 near 318th Street, the Troy community lost one of its own late Thursday night. Dustin B. Saunders, 32, was killed in a single‑vehicle crash just after 10:30 p.m., authorities confirmed.

Saunders was driving a 2001 Ford F‑150 northbound when, for reasons that remain under investigation, his truck veered off the roadway. The pickup hit a tree, spun, and finally came to rest in the east ditch along K‑7.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Saunders was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other cars involved in the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol’s preliminary report notes Saunders was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. This detail is being included as part of the ongoing investigation into what caused the vehicle to leave the road.

Friends and family in Troy are reeling from the loss. Those who knew Dustin describe him as someone with a warm heart and a ready smile, the kind of neighbor who would stop to help out without being asked. His sudden passing has stirred deep sadness in the rural community he called home.

Late winter roads in northeast Kansas can be unforgiving, and small highway corridors like K‑7 stretch for miles through open farmland. Residents often remind each other about the importance of seat belt safety after tragedies like this. Investigators continue to comb for clues that might explain why Dustin’s truck left the pavement on that cold January night.

As Troy mourns, loved ones are focusing on the bright parts of Dustin’s life—the laughter he shared, the good times with friends, and the everyday moments that now stand out all the more sharply. His memory lives on in stories and the quiet corners of the town that knew him best.
