Durham Triple Shooting: Local Rapper Tevin “YBT” Burney Among Two Killed, Woman Hurt Near North Roxboro Street

Durham, NC — A quiet stretch of North Roxboro Street turned into a scene of chaos just before midnight Friday when gunfire erupted outside the Regency Place Apartments. Neighbors who had been winding down for the night were jolted awake by the sound of shots that would leave two young men dead and a woman injured.

Police officers who rushed to the 3500 block of North Roxboro found three people inside a vehicle, all shot and bleeding. Two adult men were beyond help and were pronounced dead at the scene. A woman with them was rushed to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries that authorities said were not life-threatening.

Among the dead was 23‑year‑old Tevin Burney, known to many in the community as “YBT,” a local artist who had carved out a loyal following in Durham’s music circles. Burney had been part of the rap collective 83 Babies, a group that drew attention in the late 2010s with its raw sound and viral buzz.

Also killed was 26‑year‑old Jarrett Godfrey, a fellow Durham resident whose life was abruptly cut short in the same attack. Friends and family are still reeling from the loss, struggling to make sense of how a late‑night drive ended in such tragedy.

Word of Burney’s death spread quickly through social feeds and group chats across the city’s music community. Fans shared memories of his lyrics and his energy, offering condolences and praise for the moments he gave them through his art.

Police have not yet released information about any suspects or motives. Detectives are canvassing the area, reviewing evidence, and speaking with anyone who might shed light on why the shooting happened.

Officials described the case as active and ongoing. They urged anyone with information to come forward as the community continues to mourn two young lives lost far too soon.
