Hope Cartwright, a 23-year-old associate editor at Virginia Living Magazine, died Monday evening after a hit-and-run collision in downtown Richmond. Friends, colleagues, and family are struggling to make sense of a young life cut short at the start of what many believed would be a meaningful career.
Cartwright was walking in the marked crosswalk at the intersection of East Cary Street and South 2nd Street just before 5:35 p.m. She had the walk signal and was moving at a normal pace when a blue pickup truck turning left from Cary struck her. Bystanders called emergency services, and she was rushed to a local hospital, but she later died from her injuries.

The scene was chaotic, with witnesses describing a moment that seemed sudden and senseless. Local resident Ari Abad said her security camera captured the collision and showed Cartwright walking with the right of way when the truck hit her. According to people nearby, the driver never stopped. Instead, the vehicle sped off before police arrived.
Within about an hour, Richmond police used traffic cameras and automatic license plate reader data to pinpoint the truck and its registered owner. Officers located the vehicle parked not far from the crash site and made contact with the owner, 41-year-old Latesha Coleman of Richmond. Coleman was arrested and charged with felony hit and run.
Cartwright’s employer released a heartfelt statement confirming her death. Virginia Living Magazine described her as gifted and dedicated, someone deeply connected to the city and proud of her work. The loss has hit the newsroom and broader community hard, with many noting she had a rare blend of talent and kindness.
Richmond police praised their team’s use of technology in quickly identifying the suspect, but leaders also acknowledged the tragedy highlights broader pedestrian safety issues in the city. This part of Cary Street has seen multiple crashes in recent years, contributing to growing concerns about how drivers and pedestrians share busy downtown roads.
Friends and coworkers remember Cartwright as warm and thoughtful, someone who brought life to every story she wrote and every room she entered. Her death has sparked conversations about street safety and the need for drivers to be more attentive, especially in bustling urban areas.
This incident remains under investigation, and police continue to urge anyone with information to come forward. The city faces a somber reckoning as residents mourn a promising young journalist taken too soon.
