Sixteen-year-old Jaren Troy Lawson, a junior at Stevens High School, died Wednesday morning after collapsing during an offseason football practice the day before. The loss has sent shockwaves through his school and the wider community.
Lawson was taking part in Tuesday’s conditioning session when he suddenly passed out. Athletic trainers rushed to his side and worked on him right there on the field. Emergency medical teams took over and transported him to a nearby hospital. He died shortly after midnight, leaving coaches, teammates and family stunned by how fast everything changed.

Coach was with him the whole time, riding in the ambulance and staying by his side well into the night. School officials made clear that this didn’t happen on the school campus, but off-site during the training session. There were no signs beforehand that Lawson was dealing with any serious health issues.
In a message to parents and students, Principal Ryan Purtell said the school community is grieving together. He talked about the deep sadness everyone feels and shared that counselors and support teams are available for students, teachers and families struggling to process the news.
Lawson’s father took to social media to pour out his heart, calling his son his pride and joy. Friends described Jaren as a vibrant young man with big dreams, someone who lit up a room with his laugh and never backed down from a challenge. His absence has left a hole in the lives of people who loved him.
Northside Independent School District has opened an investigation into what happened, but so far there’s no clear answer on the cause of his death. Officials say they’re looking into every detail to help bring some understanding to a heartbreaking situation.
This tragedy comes just days after another student in the same school district lost their life in an unrelated accident, turning what should have been an ordinary week into a period of mourning for families across the area.
