Early Tuesday morning near Richmond, a quiet road became the scene of a heartbreaking loss when 50-year-old Jose Angel Gonzalez of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, was found dead inside his SUV after it ran off the road just before dawn. Emergency crews were called to the rural intersection of 374th Avenue and State Line Road at about 6:50 a.m. after a passing motorist reported a vehicle off the roadway with someone still inside.
First responders from the Richmond Township Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office reached the site within minutes. An off-duty firefighter from Twin Lakes was already at the scene doing what he could to help Gonzalez when crews arrived. They found his black 2012 GMC Terrain SUV had left the road on the Wisconsin side, drifted across State Line Road, and come to rest about 50 yards into Illinois on a grassy berm.
Crews quickly began advanced life support care, working alongside a Mercyhealth MD-1 rapid response physician. Despite their best efforts to revive him, Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene. There was no heavy damage visible on the SUV, suggesting a gentle but fatal departure from the road.
A preliminary investigation by the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Assistance Team found no signs of speeding, alcohol, or drugs playing a role. Investigators believe Gonzalez suffered a sudden medical emergency while driving that led to the crash, as there were no obvious injuries from a collision. The McHenry County Coroner’s Office confirmed the determination and later released his body to family for funeral arrangements.
Officials expressed sorrow over the loss, noting how quickly life can change on a calm weekday morning. Kenosha County Sheriff David Zoerner extended condolences to Gonzalez’s family, thanking emergency responders for their rapid and professional efforts.
