ROANOKE, Va. — Early Sunday morning brought heartbreak to this city when 20-year-old Khireem Porter was shot and killed on the 2000 block of Carroll Avenue Northwest. Police arrived just after 9:15 a.m. and found Porter in a vehicle with at least one other man suffering from gunshot wounds. Porter was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a grieving community and family in shock.
Friends describe Khireem as a bright, caring young man who lit up rooms with his smile and warmth. He was known for his kindness and the genuine energy he brought to every conversation. His loss has left a hole in the hearts of those who knew him best.

The second man in the vehicle was also critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital as officers secured the scene and began their investigation. Authorities have not yet released his identity, but have confirmed both were shot before police arrived.
Neighbors told reporters the early morning quiet was shattered by sirens, flashing lights, and a heavy police presence. For many residents on Carroll Avenue, the scene was surreal — a stark contrast to the neighborhood’s usual Sunday calm.
Roanoke Police say the investigation into Porter’s death is active and ongoing. Detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage, urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be shared anonymously with the Roanoke Police Department at (540) 344-8500.
Family members gathered near the scene hours after the shooting, hugging and supporting one another while holding onto memories of Khireem’s laughter and gentle spirit. A few shared that he was always ready to lend a hand, comfort a friend, or brighten someone’s day.
At a time when the community expected prayer and peace around local church services, the violence reminded many that no place feels entirely untouched by the country’s rising gun violence. Still, friends and loved ones are determined to remember Porter for who he was — not how he died.
As the investigation continues, Porter’s family plans a memorial to celebrate his life later this week, where friends and neighbors can share stories and grieve together. In a city still healing from recent violent incidents, many are asking for peace, unity, and answers.
The Roanoke Police Department continues to work the case with a heavy presence in the area, making themselves available to residents who are still coming to grips with the tragedy.
