Chicago police are actively investigating a deadly shooting that left 34-year-old Daniel C. Diaz, known locally as “Popeye D,” dead on Thursday near Cullerton Street and Leavitt Street.
The shooting began after residents reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area. Officers rushed to the scene and found Diaz with critical injuries caused by several gunshot wounds. Despite rapid emergency response, he was pronounced dead where he was found.

The focus now has shifted heavily toward identifying who carried out the attack. Investigators are treating the case as a homicide and working through available leads from the scene.
Police have not released any information about a suspect or suspects. There is still no confirmed description of the shooter, and no motive has been established at this point in the investigation.
Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood, speaking with witnesses, and pulling footage from surveillance cameras positioned around the intersection. Every available detail is being reviewed to reconstruct how the shooting unfolded.
Diaz was known in the area and reportedly had ties to the 1800/8Boyz faction of the Satan Disciples. Authorities have not said whether that connection played any role in the attack, but it remains part of the broader investigation context.
The lack of immediate answers has left the community unsettled. Residents say the sound of gunfire has become an all-too-familiar experience, but each incident still brings fear and frustration.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue working to identify the person or people responsible. The investigation remains active, with updates expected as new evidence is processed.
