WILMINGTON, N.C.: Marine Daniel Montano Killed After Downtown Stabbing, Community Grieves

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The death of 21-year-old Marine Lance Corporal Daniel Montano has left Wilmington shaken after a violent early morning confrontation in the downtown area on Easter Sunday turned deadly.

Montano, who was stationed at Camp Lejeune, was involved in an altercation that quickly escalated. During the encounter, he was stabbed in the neck, a wound that proved fatal.

Emergency responders rushed him to receive medical care. Despite efforts to save his life, he later died from his injuries.

Police later identified and arrested 47-year-old Davy Spencer in connection with the attack. He is now facing serious criminal charges tied to the killing.

Authorities say Spencer has been charged with second-degree murder as well as two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Investigators have not yet released a full account of what triggered the confrontation. Officials confirmed that the case is still under active investigation as they work to reconstruct the events.

Records indicate Spencer has a long history with the criminal justice system. He has previously been convicted of felonies and has spent multiple periods under incarceration and probation.

Wilmington Police leadership has pointed to growing concerns about violent incidents in the area, noting that homicides have been increasing and community tension remains high.
Residents and officials continue to react to the loss of a young service member, while broader discussions grow around repeat offenders and public safety in the city.
