NASHVILLE Crash Kills 23‑Year‑Old Oluwalayomi Fadero as Suspect Flees in Stolen Truck

NASHVILLE — A quiet Friday morning turned into a nightmare for a young woman’s family when a stolen pickup truck, driven the wrong way at high speed on Murfreesboro Pike, slammed into her car and killed her, police said. The victim, 23‑year‑old Oluwalayomi Fadero, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her sudden death has left a tight‑knit circle of friends and relatives in shock and mourning.

Fadero was driving her sedan and preparing to turn into her neighborhood off Murfreesboro Pike near Hickory Woods Drive when the stolen Ford F‑250 collided with her car on the driver’s side. Police described the impact as violent and immediate, leaving no chance to save her life. Fadero had recently graduated from Fisk University and was at the start of her adult life when the crash happened.

Authorities said the pickup had been taken earlier that morning from a North Nashville car lot. The owner had tracked the vehicle to an alley off St. Louis Street, where the suspect reversed the truck and rammed the owner’s vehicle before fleeing. Minutes later, the vehicle was seen going the wrong way on Murfreesboro Pike.

The driver, identified as 52‑year‑old Ray Eugene Padgett, was on parole at the time. After striking Fadero’s car, he suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries. Paramedics took him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Police arrested him once he was released from the hospital.

Padgett now faces multiple felony charges, including criminally negligent homicide, vehicular homicide by recklessness, felony reckless endangerment, attempted criminal homicide and driving on a revoked license. His bond was set at $805,000. Police noted he has a lengthy criminal record with about 20 prior felony convictions across several Tennessee counties.

Friends and classmates described Fadero as bright and full of promise, someone who was excited about her career and life ahead. Her loss has been felt deeply in her community, with many saying her death was senseless and avoidable.

Investigators continue to piece together the moments leading up to the deadly crash. Authorities said the initial damage to the car lot owner and an unmarked police vehicle suggest a chaotic sequence of events before Fadero’s life was cut short.
