Miami-Dade — A routine crash investigation turned frighteningly dangerous early Saturday when a 53‑year‑old man allegedly driving drunk failed to slow down and slammed his pickup into a deputy’s cruiser, authorities said. The incident unfolded just before 2:45 a.m. near Northwest 135th Street and 47th Avenue, where deputies were already working to block off traffic following a separate, fatal crash earlier in the night.
Deputies had set up lights and a cruiser to protect the scene when the red pickup, driven by Yovany Izquierdo of Miami, approached going westbound. Instead of stopping, the vehicle struck the right side of the cruiser, knocking into the deputy’s position and shattering the quiet of the pre‑dawn hours. The deputy sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene before continuing with the investigation.

When officers made contact with Izquierdo, they said he showed clear signs of impairment. His eyes appeared bloodshot and watery, his speech was slurred, and he smelled of alcohol, deputies reported. Another deputy arrived and conducted field sobriety tests, which Izquierdo reportedly failed to perform correctly.
After his arrest, Izquierdo agreed to provide breath samples. Those readings showed his blood‑alcohol content well over three times the legal limit in Florida. He now faces DUI charges including DUI with damage to property or a person. The unexpected collision has left fellow deputies shaken and reminded drivers how quickly one bad decision can amplify an already tragic night
