Pathfork Community, Kentucky: The quiet rural community of Pathfork in Harlan County is reeling after a deadly stabbing that took the life of 50-year-old Mary Clayborn and led to murder charges against her boyfriend, 36-year-old Michael Howard.
The incident happened Saturday evening at a home along KY 72 in Pathfork. Kentucky State Police say troopers were called to the scene at about 6:57 p.m. after reports of a stabbing inside the residence.


When officers arrived, they found Clayborn suffering from multiple stab wounds. Troopers quickly stepped in and tried to give emergency aid while waiting for medical personnel to arrive.
Emergency responders rushed her to Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital. Despite continued efforts by hospital staff to save her life, she was later pronounced dead.
Investigators say Michael Howard, Clayborn’s boyfriend, is accused of stabbing her multiple times during the incident. Authorities have not yet released details on what led to the confrontation.
Howard was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. He has been charged with murder in connection with Clayborn’s death.
He is currently being held at the Harlan County Detention Center. Jail records also show he had outstanding traffic violations and failure-to-appear issues at the time of his arrest.
Kentucky State Police say the investigation is still active as detectives work to piece together the full sequence of events that led to the fatal encounter. The community remains shaken as residents struggle to process the sudden violence.
