GREENSBORO Alabama Officer Hurt, Driver Dead After Traffic Stop Turns Violent

Greensboro, Alabama — A routine traffic stop turned into a violent clash Thursday evening in Hale County that left a local police officer wounded and the driver who opened fire dead, authorities said. The unsettling encounter happened just after 7:30 p.m. April 2 on Blount Street in Greensboro.

Police say Officer Miguel Edwards pulled over a vehicle driven by 64‑year‑old Robert Williams of Greensboro. What began as a simple stop quickly spiraled when Williams pulled out a gun and shot at Edwards without warning. The officer fired back in self‑defense, striking Williams.

Williams was rushed to Hale County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Officer Edwards was also taken to a local hospital with injuries sustained in the shooting. Officials have not released details about his current condition but described his wounds as serious enough to require hospitalization.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case and has confirmed details of the exchange of gunfire. Hal Taylor, ALEA’s secretary, expressed deep concern for Officer Edwards and his family, noting the sudden danger that officers face even in everyday traffic stops.

Taylor said the law enforcement community is shaken by the violence and hopes for Edwards’s full recovery. The ongoing investigation will be turned over to the Hale County District Attorney’s Office once complete.

Neighbors on Blount Street said they were startled by the sound of gunshots and the sudden appearance of law enforcement in force. Some described Greensboro as a quiet place where such violence is rare, making the incident all the more disturbing for the tight‑knit community.

As Greensboro residents absorb the news, many have expressed support for the injured officer through social media posts and community messages. Prayers and well wishes are spreading for Edwards’s healing and for the families affected by the night’s events.
