Knoxville is reeling after 46‑year‑old Angel Melendez was shot and killed by police Wednesday morning during a tense search for a missing 15‑year‑old girl. What began as a hopeful effort to find a frightened teen ended in tragedy at the North Park Apartments on Tillery Road.
Officers with the Knoxville Police Department’s Special Operations Squad were answering an endangered child alert tied to the teen’s disappearance when they arrived at an apartment just before 10:30 a.m. Witnesses described a quiet complex that suddenly became a scene of chaos.

Knoxville police say they knocked and announced themselves before entering the unit. Inside, they found the missing teen and Melendez. As officers tried to detain Melendez, police reported that he pulled a gun and pointed it at them. That’s when two officers fired their weapons, striking him multiple times. Melendez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers were not injured during the shooting. The teen also came out of the frightening ordeal physically unharmed, though police allege she struck one officer in the head with a large knife during the encounter. The officer was wearing protective headgear and was not injured. The teen now faces an assault charge.
Police confirmed Melendez was not related to the missing girl. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead on the case, working to piece together the exact sequence of events that turned a search mission into a deadly confrontation. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, and Knoxville Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will review the incident.
Neighbors say they were shocked to learn of the shooting. Many came outside when police vehicles and crime scene tape filled the parking lot, their eyes on officers and investigators moving through the hallway. What had been a normal morning turned into a flashpoint of grief and questions for the community.
In statements released later in the day, family members and friends described Melendez as a familiar face in the neighborhood, someone they never expected to be at the center of such a violent event. Their grief was palpable, mixing sorrow with confusion about how the search for a missing child could escalate so quickly.
As Knoxville absorbs the shock, authorities say they will release more details as the investigation continues. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s work will help determine not just what happened, but how similar tragedies might be prevented in the future.
