HAMDEN, Conn. Man William Gatch Dies After Fall at Sleeping Giant State Park

HAMDEN, Conn. — William Gatch, 23, a young man from Statesboro, Georgia, died Monday morning after a fall while hiking at Sleeping Giant State Park. Gatch was exploring the woods when he slipped from an unmarked trail just before noon. First responders rushed into the forest after a call came in around 11:45 a.m., but Gatch’s injuries were too severe and he died at the scene.

Friends and family are still coming to terms with the loss of someone described as full of life and promise. Gatch’s trip to the park was meant to be a peaceful outdoor experience, but it ended in unimaginable heartbreak for those who knew him. His sudden passing has left loved ones struggling to understand how a simple hike could turn so tragic.

Officials with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the fall happened on a lesser‑known path, not part of the park’s marked trail system. The park’s rugged landscape draws hikers for its scenic views and challenging terrain, but that same terrain can be unforgiving if someone wanders off the main routes.

DEEP’s Environmental Conservation Police are working with the New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine exactly how the accident happened. Early indications point to the fall being unintentional, a tragic misstep rather than anything else.

People who visit Sleeping Giant often talk about its beauty — from rocky overlooks to wooded paths that wind up the ridge — but locals remind hikers to stick to marked trails, especially in spring when the landscape can be wet and slippery. Gatch’s family is urging others to stay safe and mindful of the risks that come with wilderness areas.

Mourners have shared memories of Gatch as a bright young man with a love for the outdoors. Tributes have poured in from both his hometown and from classmates who are still grieving the loss of someone so young. His death is a stark reminder of how quickly joy can turn to tragedy when the unexpected happens in nature.

As the investigation continues, the community in Hamden and beyond is coming together in memory of Gatch, honoring the life he lived and the adventures he loved.
