BIRMINGHAM, Ala. A quiet Birmingham neighborhood woke up to heartbreak after a fast-moving house fire claimed the lives of three members of the Hicks family. The victims were 49-year-old Edward Hicks III, his 48-year-old wife Farintina Pleshette Hicks, and their 18-year-old daughter, Laila Nicole Hicks.
The fire broke out around 2:00 a.m. in a one-story brick home located in the Green Acres area of west Birmingham. A neighbor first spotted flames and made the emergency call that brought firefighters rushing to the scene.

When crews arrived, the home was already heavily involved. Thick smoke and intense flames were coming from the structure, making immediate rescue efforts extremely difficult.
Firefighters managed to reach the family and pull all three occupants from the burning home. They were rushed to UAB Hospital in critical condition, but despite efforts to save them, all three were pronounced dead.
Authorities later noted a critical safety issue inside the home. There were no working smoke detectors, a factor officials believe may have significantly reduced the family’s chance of escaping in time.
The tragedy hit especially hard in the school community. Laila Hicks was a senior at Ramsay IB High School. School officials expressed deep sorrow and said grief counseling would be made available to students and staff.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue officials confirmed that the Fire Marshal’s Office is now working to determine how the fire started and what caused it to spread so quickly through the home.
The Birmingham Police Department is also involved, continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the deaths as the investigation remains open and active.
