Palm Beach County Eden Prairie Woman Ashleigh Whitton, 45, is fighting for her life after a devastating crash during a triathlon in Florida. She was competing in the bike segment of the Bill Bone Olympic Triathlon near Okeeheelee Park on Sunday, April 12, when everything went wrong in a split second.
According to the fundraiser set up by her loved ones, a 74-year-old driver entered a partially closed race course and struck Whitton along with another cyclist. The impact was severe enough to send emergency crews rushing to the scene without delay.

Whitton was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Doctors immediately moved her into emergency surgery to stabilize her spine after what has been described as one of the most serious spinal cord injuries they treat. Her condition was critical from the start.
She is now in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit. Medical reports shared through the fundraiser say she is paralyzed from the neck down and dependent on a ventilator. Brain swelling and bleeding have added to the complexity of her condition.
Family members say the situation changed life instantly. What was supposed to be a competitive and routine endurance race turned into a long-term medical crisis that no one saw coming.
A close friend, Jen Greene, helped organize a GoFundMe campaign alongside Whitton’s husband, Patrick. The fundraiser is aimed at covering intensive care costs, long-term rehabilitation, breathing support, and travel needs for family members who are now staying close to her hospital bedside.
The campaign has already raised more than $50,000, showing strong community support as Whitton remains in critical condition. Organizers say every donation is being directed toward her recovery and the growing medical expenses ahead.
Authorities in Palm Beach County say the crash is still under active investigation. No charges have been announced so far as officials continue to review how a vehicle was allowed onto a partially closed race route.
