Columbus, Ohio – The man charged with killing Monique and Spencer Tepe has been formally extradited from Illinois to Franklin County, marking a grim chapter in a case that has gripped both cities. Michael David McKee, 39, arrived in Ohio this week and has been booked into the county jail as authorities prepare for his arraignment.
The tragedy began on December 30, 2025, when police found the couple shot inside their Weinland Park home. Friends and family reported Spencer, 37, a respected dentist, hadn’t shown up for work, prompting a welfare check. Officers discovered the bodies on the second floor and the couple’s two young children unharmed in another room.

From early on, detectives treated the deaths as murder, not suicide, noting no signs of forced entry and no weapon at the scene. Neighbors shared surveillance video with police. Investigators spotted a vehicle arriving shortly before and leaving after the attack, and linked it back to McKee.
McKee, a vascular surgeon who had lived in Chicago, was arrested on January 10 at a Chick-fil-A near his medical office in Rockford, Illinois. He initially faced two counts of murder, but a Franklin County grand jury later returned a broader indictment that includes four counts of aggravated murder and an aggravated burglary charge.
Court filings show McKee waived his extradition hearing in Illinois, saying through his public defender that he intends to plead not guilty. Ohio prosecutors allege he traveled hundreds of miles to Columbus with a firearm, possibly equipped with a suppressor, and carried out a premeditated attack. A weapon found at his Illinois property has been preliminarily linked to the killings.
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant called the crime a “targeted domestic violence attack,” acknowledging McKee was Monique’s ex-husband. The couple had divorced in 2017 after a short marriage, and Monique later married Spencer in 2020.
The community response has been heavy. Neighbors, friends, and family have expressed shock and grief over the loss of two vibrant parents. A GoFundMe set up for the Tepe children has drawn significant support. McKee now faces life in prison if convicted on the aggravated murder counts.
