San Antonio: Miguel Martinez Dies After Being Hit While Fixing His Truck on Highway 90

Early Monday morning, San Antonio woke to devastating news when 34‑year‑old Miguel Martinez died after being struck by passing vehicles on U.S. Highway 90 West. Martinez had pulled his truck over near Cupples Road because of car trouble, turned on his emergency flashers and stepped out to try to fix the problem. Emergency responders were called around 6:15 a.m. when passing drivers realized something was terribly wrong.

His white truck sat on the side of the busy west‑side highway, hazard lights blinking against the dim dawn. Martinez was standing outside, trying to make a plan before heading off to work, when a vehicle failed to see him in time. Authorities say the first impact came quickly, and at least one more vehicle hit him before the traffic finally slowed. Both drivers stayed at the scene and called for help.

Police and first responders worked to secure the scene as traffic backed up for miles. The Texas Department of Transportation reported that several eastbound lanes were closed for hours as crews and investigators combed the area. Highway 90, normally full of morning commuters, turned into a slow crawl as neighbors and strangers alike learned of the tragedy unfolding near General McMullen Drive.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene. The Bexar County Medical Examiner has not yet released the official cause or manner of death, and the San Antonio Police Department has said the investigation is ongoing as they work to piece together how the tragedy happened.

A husband and father, Martinez left home that morning like any other, with plans to provide for his family and return later in the day. Instead, his wife Shugey was left with a pain that can’t be measured in words. In a heartfelt plea, she’s asked for prayers as she tries to explain something so sudden to their children — ages 16, 7 and 5. The community that knew him describes a man deeply loved and dedicated to his family and friends.

Neighbors have started leaving flowers and notes near the stretch of Highway 90 where the crash happened. Many speak of Martinez’s kindness, calling him a steady presence whose laughter lit up rooms. In a city still shaking from the loss, folks are remembering his warm spirit and the life he lived before that fateful morning.

Officials reminded drivers to slow down and be alert, especially when approaching a stopped vehicle on busy road shoulders. They urged motorists to give extra space to those who are broken down, saying that simple attention can mean the difference between life and death.
