A quiet stretch of rural Nebraska turned into a crime scene that has left a community shaken and searching for answers. Authorities say 40-year-old Wesley Absher is at the center of a deadly chain of events that unfolded south of Shelby, ending with one man dead, a woman injured, and the suspect fighting for his life.
Investigators say the incident began at a business located near County Road T and 127th Road. That is where 44-year-old Brian Gabel, the owner of the business, was fatally shot. Deputies believe Absher traveled to the location with intent, though the exact motive has not yet been publicly confirmed.

At the time of the shooting, a woman was also present inside the business. According to authorities, Absher forced her from the scene and drove her to a separate rural area near County Road S and 129th Road. What followed was described by investigators as a violent assault that continued at that second location.
Somewhere along that isolated farmland, the situation took another turn. Authorities say Absher shot himself after the assault. Despite the chaos, the woman managed to escape. She drove herself to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in Osceola, arriving shortly after 1:30 a.m., where she reported the entire incident.
Law enforcement quickly responded, securing both locations connected to the case. Emergency crews transported Absher to a hospital in Lincoln with life-threatening injuries. The woman was also hospitalized, though officials say her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
As investigators dug deeper, they confirmed that Absher and the woman were in the process of divorcing. That detail has added another layer to an already troubling case, raising questions about what led to the violence.
The Nebraska State Patrol continues to lead the investigation, working to piece together the timeline and circumstances behind the shooting, kidnapping, and attempted suicide. For now, officials are holding back further details as they continue their work.
In a small community where everyone tends to know each other, the loss of Brian Gabel and the violence surrounding his death have left a deep mark. Residents are left grappling with how something so severe could unfold so close to home.
