A quiet early morning drive turned deadly in Pelham, Alabama, when 20-year-old Jesse Southard lost his life in a violent wrong-way crash on Interstate 65. It happened just after 3 a.m. on Friday, April 24, and it has left the Birmingham area shaken and grieving.
Southard was driving a 2012 Honda Accord northbound on I-65 when tragedy struck. According to investigators, another vehicle had entered the northbound lanes traveling the wrong direction.

That vehicle was a truck driven by 37-year-old April Ballard of Leeds. Authorities say the truck moved into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into Southard’s car.
The impact was devastating. Both vehicles were heavily damaged, and both drivers suffered fatal injuries in the collision. Southard was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency crews rushed to the crash site along a stretch of I-65 near Pelham. The northbound lanes between the Tank Farm exit and Oak Mountain State Park exit were shut down for several hours as responders worked the scene.
Police and other agencies spent the early morning carefully investigating what happened and clearing the wreckage. The investigation is still ongoing, and officials have not yet explained why the truck entered the wrong side of the highway.
