Greenville Marathon: Colton James Harman, 24, Dies After Collapsing During Race

The Greenville running community is mourning the sudden loss of Colton James Harman, a 24-year-old runner from Columbia whose life ended while he was doing something he loved — running.

Harman collapsed along the course of the Greenville Half Marathon on February 28. Witnesses say he suddenly went down during the race, prompting an immediate response from medical staff stationed along the route. First responders rushed to help and attempted lifesaving measures on the scene, but despite their efforts, Harman later died.

News of his death spread quickly among runners and spectators who had gathered for the popular South Carolina race. Many described the moment as shocking and heartbreaking, turning what was meant to be a day of endurance and celebration into one marked by grief.

Harman was born on November 19, 2001, in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the son of Gary Duane Harman and Nikki Lee Lukas Harman. Friends and family remember him as energetic, warm-hearted, and deeply passionate about sports and outdoor activities.

He graduated from Blythewood High School in 2020, where he was active in athletics, including baseball and football. Those who knew him during those years say he carried a strong competitive spirit but was also known for encouraging teammates and lifting others up.

After high school, Harman attended the University of South Carolina. There, he earned a degree in business with a minor in sport administration. His love for sports continued through college, where he stayed active in intramural athletics and campus life.

Following graduation, Harman began building his career as a field service representative with ACO Med Supply in Greenville. Friends say he approached his work with the same dedication he brought to athletics — steady, dependable, and always ready to help others.

Funeral services for Harman were scheduled for March 7 at Village Church in Blythewood. After the service, he was laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia. Loved ones gathered to remember a young man whose kindness and enthusiasm had touched many lives.
