Northwood, Ohio Teen Symini Moore Killed in Apartment Shooting; Suspect Says Gun Fired While He Was Cleaning It

Northwood, Ohio — In the quiet neighborhood around the 3700 block of Lakepointe Drive, a community was shattered late Friday night when 15‑year‑old Symini Moore was fatally shot inside an apartment. The Lake Township Police Department says first responders arrived around 10:45 p.m. after a call reporting a person shot and found Moore with fatal injuries.

Friends and neighbors in this small Ohio town are still trying to make sense of what happened. Moore, a sophomore at Woodmore High School, was described by those who knew her as a bright, caring young woman who lit up every room she walked into. She played sports, sang in choir, and was active in Future Farmers of America, all while keeping strong grades.

Inside that same apartment when the shooting happened were four people, including 18‑year‑old Jakob Heintzelman, his girlfriend, and another male. Police say Heintzelman has been arrested and charged with reckless homicide. He is being held without bond.

In interviews with detectives, Heintzelman claimed the gun discharged accidentally while he was cleaning it. Investigators have not confirmed whether that explanation will shape how prosecutors move forward, but the charge he now faces suggests authorities believe negligence played a role in Moore’s death.

Symini’s family and classmates have flooded social media with memories and photos. A GoFundMe page set up to help with funeral and memorial costs says she worked at Granny’s Kitchen and had a smile that “lit up a room instantly.” The tribute paints a picture of a generous teen whose kindness went beyond her years.

Even though investigators are still piecing together the exact chain of events, phone calls and messages of support from around Ohio show how deeply her loss has been felt. Teachers and coaches have spoken of her dedication both on and off the field, and classmates describe a friend who was always ready to help.

The police continue to ask anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as the case works its way through the legal system. Meanwhile, Moore’s friends and family are planning a community memorial to celebrate her life and the joy she brought to so many.
