Minneapolis police are investigating a frightening robbery and assault that left journalist Nick Sortor shaken and injured after a chaotic encounter in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Sortor says the incident unfolded quickly and violently, turning a routine moment into a near-tragedy on a cold city sidewalk.

According to Sortor, several individuals approached him and took his camera equipment, which he valued at about $1,000. The gear, he said, was essential to his work. What began as a theft escalated within seconds, as the suspects rushed to flee the area in a vehicle.
Sortor reported that as the car sped away, it veered onto an icy sidewalk. In the confusion, his hand became caught in the door handle. He says he was dragged along the pavement as the vehicle continued moving, putting his life in immediate danger before he finally broke free.
Even more disturbing, Sortor said no bystanders stepped in as the scene unfolded. Afterward, he claims the ordeal did not end there. He reported being followed for roughly 30 minutes by individuals he believes were connected to the incident, with constant honking and remarks suggesting he did not belong in Minnesota.
In statements he later shared, Sortor identified a woman he believes was involved, naming Subeyda Mohamed. He alleged that the vehicle and license plate he observed during the incident matched records associated with her. Mohamed is said by Sortor to own a children’s autism services business in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota.
Law enforcement officials have not publicly confirmed that identification. Authorities have been careful to stress that no suspects have been formally named and no arrests have been announced as the investigation continues.
The case has now drawn the attention of federal authorities. Sortor says the FBI is involved, signaling the seriousness of the allegations and the potential scope of the investigation. Local police are still collecting information and reviewing any available evidence.
Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or captured video in the Cedar-Riverside area at the time to come forward. For now, the case remains open, with many questions unanswered and a journalist still processing a moment he says could have ended far worse.
