Port Aransas Spring Break Crash Kills 22‑Year‑Old Michael Brown

Port Aransas, Texas — Michael Brown, a 22‑year‑old man from Nixon, Texas, died after he was seriously injured in a spring break crash along Highway 361 near Cinnamon Shore and Access Road 1A. The crash happened late on the evening of March 14 when a Jeep he was in struck another car during heavy traffic heading toward the beach. Brown was thrown from the vehicle in the collision and rushed to a local hospital. He remained under medical care before dying from his injuries at 11:35 a.m. on March 20.

Friends had been enjoying spring break when a video taken shortly before the crash went viral online. In the footage, Brown is shirtless and standing through the sunroof of the moving Jeep, dancing on its roof as the vehicle slowly made its way toward Mustang Island. Seconds later, the Jeep struck a Tesla in heavy traffic, and Brown was thrown onto the pavement. The moment turned tragic within minutes.

First responders arrived at the scene and found Brown with a severe head injury. He was taken to a local emergency facility and later moved for advanced care, but never regained strength. No other injuries were reported at the time of the crash. People who saw the video and those who knew Brown have expressed deep sadness over the loss of a young life that began with excitement and ended in heartbreak.

Police reported that the driver of the Jeep, 24‑year‑old Riley Rhoades, showed signs of intoxication at the scene. Officers arrested Rhoades on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The Texas Department of Public Safety is handling the criminal DWI investigation, and authorities have said charges could be upgraded following Brown’s death.

In the days after the crash, Brown’s family and friends set up a fund to help cover his medical and funeral costs. Many spring breakers who had been nearby at the time shared their shock and sorrow as the story spread across social media and local news outlets. The tragedy has prompted conversations about safety, alcohol use, and taking risks while celebrating.

Port Aransas remains a popular destination during spring break, drawing crowds with its beaches and coastal activities. But this year’s festivities took a somber turn when joy and laughter gave way to mourning. Brown’s family described him as a vibrant young man who loved life and was looking forward to his future, and they now have to cope with a sudden and painful loss.

As the investigation continues, local officials and community members hope the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly a moment of recklessness can change everything for good.
