Billings: Christopher Tenderholt Fatally Struck by Train Along Laurel Road

A quiet Saturday afternoon in Billings turned tragic when a train struck and killed 53-year-old Christopher Tenderholt along Laurel Road, leaving a community searching for answers and a family coping with sudden loss.

Authorities say the fatal collision happened around 3 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Laurel Road and Parkway Lane. Emergency calls quickly brought Billings police, firefighters, deputies from the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, and railroad officials rushing to the scene. By the time crews arrived, the situation had already turned grim.

Yellowstone County Coroner Rich Hoffman later confirmed that Tenderholt died from multiple blunt force trauma caused by the impact. Officials say the manner of death is still under investigation as authorities work to understand the circumstances that led to the collision.

The crash forced authorities to shut down Laurel Road for several hours while investigators worked the scene and emergency crews carried out their response. Drivers passing through the area were diverted as police secured the tracks and surrounding roadway.

Witnesses described a disturbing moment that unfolded in seconds. One driver who had been waiting at a nearby traffic light said he noticed the train approaching when something caught his eye near the tracks. Moments later, he saw a man struck and thrown through the air before landing down an embankment. The witness said the shock of what he saw stayed with him long after the train had stopped.

Another motorist traveling with children initially believed she had stumbled upon a car accident. But as she got closer, she realized the scene involved a train and a person lying on the ground. The sight left many nearby drivers shaken as emergency crews worked behind them.

Investigators say they do not believe Tenderholt’s death was a suicide. Still, police continue to review the details surrounding the incident as they piece together exactly what happened during those final moments along the tracks.

Meanwhile, family members have begun raising money online to help cover cremation costs, hoping to ease the financial burden following the sudden tragedy. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information to contact Billings police as the investigation continues.
