The city of Albany, Georgia is grieving after a violent crash late Saturday night took the lives of 26-year-old Rickey Thomas and a 4-year-old child. The wreck happened around 9:41 p.m. along the 1900 block of Krug Street, turning what should have been a quiet night into a scene of chaos and heartbreak.
Police say the crash was tied to suspected street racing between two vehicles. Investigators believe the situation spiraled out of control when one of the drivers lost command of the car. That vehicle slammed into multiple others on the roadway, setting off a chain reaction that left several people hurt and two lives gone.
Rickey Thomas and the young child were both critically injured in the crash. Emergency responders rushed to help, but their injuries were too severe. Both were pronounced dead, leaving behind grieving families and a shaken community struggling to make sense of the loss.
Two other people were hurt in the collision but survived. Authorities say their injuries were not life-threatening. They were taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, where they received treatment and are expected to recover physically, though the emotional toll may linger much longer.
As the investigation unfolded, police identified 24-year-old Brandon King as one of the drivers involved. Another driver, 25-year-old Jacob Daniels Jr., left the scene immediately after the crash but later returned. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Authorities have filed serious charges against both men. Brandon King faces two counts of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, along with reckless driving and racing on a highway.
