Early Sunday morning in Ruskin felt like a blur of sirens and shock for neighbors after a fatal shooting left a man dead and a woman wounded. Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office raced to the scene around 1:19 a.m. on March 15 after a 911 call reported gunfire near the 5000 block of White Chicory Drive in nearby Apollo Beach. When they arrived, what they found set off a homicide investigation and shook a quiet community.
Investigators soon located a vehicle abandoned in a ditch along 19th Avenue Northeast in Ruskin. Inside, they discovered the driver, a man, and a passenger, a woman, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency crews rushed them to a local hospital, but the man did not survive.

The woman, still alive and conscious, was also taken to the hospital and remains in stable condition as authorities continue to piece together what happened. No names have been released yet, as sheriff’s officials are waiting to notify the victim’s family before sharing identity details.
Crime scene tape stretched across the ditch and parts of the neighborhood as detectives combed for evidence. Neighbors said they were jolted awake by the sound of gunshots, then puzzled by the flashing lights and activity that followed. Friends and family gathered nearby, worried and waiting for answers they don’t yet have.
Deputies say this remains an active homicide investigation. They’re interviewing witnesses, gathering forensic evidence, and working to reconstruct the moments that led to the shooting. There’s no word yet on whether this was a random act or if the victims were targeted.
For now, questions outnumber answers in a community trying to understand how someone’s night turned deadly on a quiet stretch of road. Sheriff’s detectives promise to release additional details as they develop and continue urging anyone with information to come forward.
In the wake of the tragedy, residents are left grappling with loss, hoping for clarity, and watching as law enforcement works to bring answers to light.
