Bessemer, Alabama woke up to sorrow this week after the death of Mildred Turner Miller, 77, who died Saturday at UAB Hospital following a freak accident at her home. What began as a routine moment in her driveway on Royal Coach Circle ended with her being critically injured by her own car.
On Tuesday, February 17, Miller was near her vehicle in front of her house when it unexpectedly rolled forward. Authorities report that the car was not properly shifted into park, causing it to move and strike her. The impact left her critically hurt on the driveway pavement.
First responders arrived and transported Miller to the hospital in Birmingham. For four days, her family, wrapped in grief and hope, stayed close. On Saturday night, her injuries proved too severe, and she passed away, leaving behind a tight-knit family and a community in shock.
Miller’s death has shaken her neighbors on Royal Coach Circle. People who walked by her house daily now speak of her gentle ways, her stories and the friendly waves she always shared. In a place where faces are familiar and personal connections matter, her absence is deeply felt.
Local law enforcement and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office are reviewing the incident to confirm exactly how the accident unfolded. Early information points to a momentary lapse in setting the vehicle’s gear, a small detail with devastating consequences.
In conversations with neighbors, Miller is remembered for the quiet strength she brought to everyday life. Her passing is prompting others to think about safety and the fragility of life in ordinary moments.
While funeral plans are being made, friends and neighbors have been gathering to share memories and comfort one another. For many in Bessemer, Miller’s story is not just a cautionary tale about vehicle safety but a reminder of how one life can touch many in simple, meaningful ways.
Her death has brought the community together in grieving, and the memory of her presence in the neighborhood will linger long after the shock of her loss fades
