Carnesville Crash Kills Zoie Atkinson in Stone Bridge Road Collision

The quiet roads of Carnesville turned tragic Monday afternoon when 19-year-old Zoie Marie Atkinson lost her life in a violent crash that left a community shaken and a family grieving. The young woman, described by those who knew her as full of life, died at the scene after a head-on collision that unfolded in a matter of seconds.

The crash happened around 4:35 p.m. on Stone Bridge Road, just south of Andrews Road in Franklin County. According to investigators, Atkinson was driving a red Ford Fusion when another vehicle crossed into her lane. What followed was a devastating impact that left both cars badly damaged and spun nearly sideways before coming to rest.

Authorities say a silver Dodge Challenger, driven by 66-year-old Debra Ann Smith, had been traveling westbound when it crossed the center line and struck Atkinson’s car head-on. The force of the collision was intense, rotating both vehicles about 90 degrees before they separated. Emergency crews rushed in, but there was nothing they could do to save Atkinson.

Inside Atkinson’s vehicle were two children, a 10-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, both seated in the back. They suffered serious injuries and were quickly transported for urgent medical care. The girl was airlifted to a children’s hospital in Atlanta, while the boy was taken to a regional medical center for treatment.

First responders, including state troopers and local emergency teams, worked the scene for hours. The road remained closed well into the evening as investigators carefully examined the wreckage and tried to piece together exactly what led to the deadly crash.

Officials say there is no immediate sign that impairment played a role, but the investigation is far from over. A specialized reconstruction team has stepped in to analyze every detail, from vehicle movement to road conditions, in an effort to determine the precise cause.

For the Carnesville community, the loss hits hard. A young life cut short, children fighting to recover, and families left searching for answers. As the investigation continues, many are holding on to memories of Zoie Atkinson, while hoping for clarity and some measure of closure in the days ahead.
