Forked River was shaken on Wednesday morning after a fatal crash claimed the life of 39-year-old Eric Olesen. The incident happened on April 8, 2026, during what began as a normal start to the day in the quiet residential area.
Police from Lacey Township said officers were called at about 7:52 a.m. to the area of Lake Barnegat Drive North and Haines Street. Reports came in that a vehicle had left the roadway, pushed through a residential fence, and crashed into a tree in a backyard.
When emergency responders arrived, they found Eric Olesen inside the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other people were injured in the crash.

Early findings from investigators suggest Olesen was driving east on Haines Street before turning onto Lake Barnegat Drive North. At some point during the movement, the vehicle left the road, broke through a fence, and entered a private yard where it struck a tree.
Authorities have not said what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. The crash scene showed signs of a sudden and forceful impact, but officials have not confirmed any medical or mechanical factors at this stage.
Members of the Lacey Township Fatal Accident Support Team responded to assist. The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigations Unit and the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office also joined the investigation.
Officials say the case is still open as they work to understand the full sequence of events that led to the crash. They are reviewing evidence from the scene and other available information.
In Forked River, news of Olesen’s death spread quickly, leaving family, friends, and neighbors in shock. He is being remembered as a life cut short in a moment that unfolded without warning.
