Fairfield Ohio Fire at Koch Foods: Inside the Explosion That Killed Worker Griffin Darrow

Fairfield Ohio was shaken early Sunday when a powerful explosion and the fire that followed at the Koch Foods plant forced firefighters into a long, dangerous battle and ended with the death of 25‑year‑old Griffin Darrow. The incident began shortly after 1 a.m. at the poultry processing complex, drawing dozens of local fire units and hazmat teams to the scene as flames and smoke engulfed the sprawling facility.

Emergency responders were met with intense fire and structural instability. Portions of the roof collapsed under the heat and flames, making it impossible to safely enter the building at first. Crews fought the blaze from the outside for hours, dumping water and monitoring conditions, while drone teams scanned the site for pockets of heat and checked for potential leaks of toxic ammonia used in the plant’s refrigeration systems.

Because of those ammonia concerns, authorities issued a shelter‑in‑place order for a large area around the plant, urging residents and businesses to lock doors and stay indoors until the air quality could be confirmed safe. The order was lifted later in the morning once monitoring showed no major chemical release.

Inside the chaos of the fire, two workers who were overcome by heat and smoke were rushed to local trauma centers with burns. They were treated and released, and officials say they are expected to recover. A third worker, later identified as Griffin Darrow, was unaccounted for during the firefight. Once firefighters could safely enter damaged sections, they found his body near where the building had partially caved in.

Griffin Darrow’s death was ruled accidental, attributed to smoke inhalation. Colleagues described him as hardworking and reliable, someone who took pride in his work and was well liked among the plant’s staff. The sudden loss of such a young life has hit his friends and family hard, bringing an emotional weight to an already grim scene of charred debris and twisted metal.

Fire department investigators, along with the state fire marshal’s office, are combing through the wreckage to piece together how the explosion and fire started. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has stepped in with a formal investigation that could last months, examining whether safety lapses or equipment failures played a role.

The Koch Foods plant, a key employer in the region, now faces significant damage and an uncertain future as cleanup and repairs begin. Officials have said the financial impact of the fire will be substantial and the road to recovery for the facility could be long. In the meantime, the community is focusing on supporting those directly affected, coming together to mourn Darrow’s loss and lift up his loved ones during this difficult time.
