Michael James Turner was known in Gilbert as a steady, dependable person with a generous spirit. On Friday afternoon, he was driving his 2018 Ford pickup west on Calks Ferry Road in Lexington County when his journey came to a tragic end. The crash that followed around 5:20 p.m. has left a community hurting and families searching for answers.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Turner’s truck crossed the center line into the path of an eastbound 2025 Toyota pickup. The impact was enough to send the Toyota off the road, where it struck a tree. Turner suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Toyota’s driver was not hurt.
Turner’s life and loss have become the focus of the community’s grief this weekend. Quiet but well-liked by neighbors, he was often the kind of person others could rely on. Stories from local friends paint a picture of someone who cared about people and who contributed quietly but meaningfully to daily life in Gilbert.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the circumstances that led to Turner’s truck moving over the center line. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has confirmed Turner’s identity and has offered condolences to his family as they navigate this difficult time.
Turner’s sudden death has prompted conversations among residents about how fragile life can be and how quickly an ordinary drive can turn into tragedy. For many who knew him, the pain is deep, but so is the pride in the way he lived his life. People speak of his generosity and his willingness to help others without a second thought.
In the days since the crash, friends and family have gathered to share memories and support one another. His loss has left a noticeable gap in the community, and those who knew him remember Turner not just for how he died but for how he lived.
As the investigation continues, Lexington County leaders and residents are holding on to the stories of Turner’s kindness, hoping that his legacy will be one of connection and compassion rather than just a tragic moment on a rural road.
