Peoria Shooting: Marnelius Alexander Killed in Late-Night Gas Station Gunfire

The quiet of a late Wednesday night in Peoria was broken by a single gunshot that quickly turned into a deadly scene. Police say 23-year-old Marnelius Alexander lost his life after being shot at a gas station along Western Avenue, leaving a community searching for answers.

Officers were dispatched just before 11 p.m. on April 15, 2026, after a ShotSpotter alert flagged gunfire in the 1000 block of Western Avenue. While they were still on the way, new information came in—two people had been hit. What started as a routine response quickly escalated into a life-or-death situation.

When police arrived, they found Alexander suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest at a nearby gas station. Not far from there, a 19-year-old man was discovered outside an AutoZone with a gunshot wound to the leg. The contrast between the two victims’ conditions was stark, but the urgency was the same.

Officers immediately began life-saving efforts on Alexander. Despite their attempts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was taken to a hospital, where doctors said his injuries were not life-threatening. For one family, though, the night had already taken everything.

The Peoria County Coroner later confirmed Alexander’s identity and said the fatal shot struck his chest. The autopsy findings made it clear—his death was instant. He was officially pronounced dead around 11:45 p.m., right there at the scene where the shooting unfolded.

Investigators believe the incident took place at a Phillips 66 gas station, a place that would normally be just another stop along a busy road. Instead, it became the center of a homicide investigation now being handled by multiple police units, including detectives and crime scene specialists.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. For now, the motive remains unclear, and the people who knew Alexander are left holding onto memories, trying to make sense of a life cut short in a moment of violence.
