LAFAYETTE, La — Travis Griffin Jr., a 16‑year‑old Lafayette High student with a bright smile and big plans, was shot and killed late Monday night in a quiet neighborhood that is now shaken to its core.
It was just after 10:15 p.m. on March 23 when neighbors heard the sudden sound of gunfire near the corner of East Cedar Street and East Willow Street. Witnesses called police, and within minutes Lafayette officers arrived to find Travis lying in the street. He was already gone, his life cut short before his 17th birthday.
Friends and family describe Travis as a kid who loved football, laughed easily, and talked about going to college someday. His mother told neighbors she feels lost without him, replaying the moments before the shooting, trying to make sense of what no one yet can explain.
Police have not released details on what led to the shooting. No suspects have been named, and there is no word yet on a motive. Detectives are canvassing the area and asking for help from anyone who might have seen or heard something that night.
