Lafayette Boy, 16, Fatally Shot on East Cedar Street: Community Seeks Answers

LAFAYETTE, La — Travis Griffin Jr., a 16‑year‑old Lafayette High student with a bright smile and big plans, was shot and killed late Monday night in a quiet neighborhood that is now shaken to its core.

It was just after 10:15 p.m. on March 23 when neighbors heard the sudden sound of gunfire near the corner of East Cedar Street and East Willow Street. Witnesses called police, and within minutes Lafayette officers arrived to find Travis lying in the street. He was already gone, his life cut short before his 17th birthday.

Friends and family describe Travis as a kid who loved football, laughed easily, and talked about going to college someday. His mother told neighbors she feels lost without him, replaying the moments before the shooting, trying to make sense of what no one yet can explain.

Police have not released details on what led to the shooting. No suspects have been named, and there is no word yet on a motive. Detectives are canvassing the area and asking for help from anyone who might have seen or heard something that night. People who live nearby say they want answers, too, and some have started whispering about fear and frustration in place of the calm that used to fill the block.

As dawn broke the next morning, friends left flowers and handwritten notes at a makeshift memorial near the spot where Travis fell. One note simply said, “We miss you, Travis.” Others shared memories of him on social media, pictures of his grin, and quotes about living life to the fullest.

Community leaders said the loss of a teenager in this way is devastating, and they urged residents to speak up if they know anything that can help investigators. “This shouldn’t have happened,” one neighbor said. “We all want the truth for this young man and his family.”

The Lafayette Police Department continues to investigate. Officials ask anyone with information to come forward so the family can begin to find some peace, and so the streets of their town can feel safe again
