Springville, Indiana — The quiet of early Sunday morning shattered when 39‑year‑old Brandon M. Koontz of Crane lost his life in a violent crash on Interstate 69 just south of Bloomington. Around 4:30 a.m. on March 8, Koontz was driving a pickup truck when it suddenly left the road and slammed into a median ditch, according to state police reports.
The force of the impact threw the truck into the air and it rolled multiple times before coming to rest on its side in the grassy median. When emergency crews reached the scene, they found Koontz outside the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene from the severe injuries he sustained in the rollover, authorities said.

Family members, friends and neighbors described Koontz as a quiet but meaningful presence in the Crane community. His unexpected passing has sent shockwaves through the area, leaving people reflecting on the memories they shared with him and the mark he left on those who knew him.
The crash drew a response from multiple agencies, including Greene County EMS, the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the county coroner’s office. State police said the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing and that toxicology testing is pending as part of the standard review.
Those close to Koontz say he was someone who cared about his family and friends, someone who could light up a room with his presence. Now, those memories are taking on greater weight as loved ones try to make sense of a life cut short.
Authorities continue to piece together the details of the wreck as the community mourns. Days after the tragedy, flowers and remembrances have begun to appear near the spot along I‑69 where Koontz’s life ended, a quiet testament to the loss felt by many.
Koontz’s family has asked for privacy as they grieve and celebrate the life of a man who was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
