Dryden — The small town of Dryden is reeling after a house fire early Wednesday morning claimed the lives of three members of one extended family and left another battling injuries. Fire crews were called out just after 10 a.m. to a structure blaze at 321 Cortland Road, where the home was already fully engulfed in flames by the time first responders arrived.
Inside the home, 31‑year‑old Katherine Gray, 30‑year‑old Christy Oralls, and 3‑year‑old Paisley Wood lost their lives in the fire. All three were pronounced dead at the scene after crews worked to battle the blaze that had overtaken much of the house before they could gain access.
Another resident, 54‑year‑old David Welch, was pulled from the burning home and rushed to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where he is currently listed in stable condition. Welch and his wife rent the property and lived there with Oralls and her daughter. Welch’s wife was not home when the fire broke out. Gray was visiting the family from Whitney Point at the time of the tragic event.
Neighbors heard sirens and watched in shock as flames shot high into the sky along State Route 13. Fire departments from several nearby districts responded to the call, working for hours to fully extinguish the blaze. Authorities closed Route 13 between Dutcher Road and Gulf Hill Road for much of the day while crews worked and investigators combed through the wreckage.
Investigators with fire agencies are still working to determine what sparked the deadly fire. Early reports suggest the blaze spread rapidly, trapping occupants inside before they could escape. Officials have not confirmed a cause as of late Wednesday.
Friends and relatives gathered near the scene, hugging each other and recalling the lost ones with deep sorrow. Paisley’s young life, in particular, touched many in the community, and her smile was remembered by those who knew her. The adults, Gray and Oralls, were described as warm, caring people who brought light to their friends and family.
The town of Dryden is now left mourning a heartbreaking loss that has touched many beyond the immediate circle of relatives. In the quiet of the afternoon, locals left flowers and notes at a makeshift memorial site near the road where the home once stood, pausing to reflect on lives gone too soon.
