Jonathan Walker, 45, of Livermore died Tuesday night after his car flew off a busy Interstate 580 off‑ramp and overturned into brush alongside the freeway. It happened just before 8:45 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, at the westbound Isabel Avenue/Highway 84 exit in Livermore, California.
People in the area that evening heard emergency sirens as California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene. Walker was alone in a 2003 Audi A4 convertible when he was driving at about 90 miles per hour on I‑580 and tried to pass a slower Honda near the off‑ramp. In trying to get ahead of the other car he lost control. The Audi left the paved ramp and flipped down a steep embankment into brush just south of the freeway, according to CHP investigators.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud crash and seeing flashing lights well after evening traffic had died down. When first responders reached the overturned vehicle, Walker had already died. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau later confirmed his identity and notified his family.
The driver of the Honda that Walker attempted to pass stopped and spoke with officers. No one else was in Walker’s car and no other injuries were reported. CHP Officer Tyler Hahn said it is not yet known whether alcohol played any role in the crash; toxicology results and other investigative work remain pending.
The Isabel Avenue off‑ramp remained closed for more than three hours as police and emergency crews investigated, collected evidence and cleared the scene. The stretch of I‑580 where the crash happened is a major route into Livermore, especially during evening hours, and the closure caused delays for commuters and travelers heading through the area.
Friends and neighbors described Walker as a familiar face around Livermore. Many said they were shocked by the suddenness of the crash, especially on a night when the freeways were unusually busy for a holiday. Investigators continue to work to understand all the circumstances that led to this fatal crash.
There were no indications at the scene that weather or road conditions played a direct role, and authorities have urged drivers to stay vigilant on high‑speed corridors like I‑580. The California Highway Patrol is expected to release additional details as the investigation progresses.
